London, 9 January 2008 – lightapp Ltd, a leading innovator providing ‘anytime, anywhere’, hosted computing, has today launched lightapp Unlimited – a groundbreaking social enterprise dedicated to the digital inclusion initiative. The enterprise’s first project will be to work with education institutions in deprived areas, enabling them to offer a much higher workstation to student ratio.

Diminishing the Digital Divide

lightapp Unlimited is a social enterprise that aspires to diminish the digital divide, using lightapp's hosted computing solution to bring affordable computing to all socio-economic groups, in the UK and abroad. The enterprise will work closely with each customer to help them obtain the funding they need, with a Grant Manager being assigned to guide them through the process.

Help Where it’s Most Needed
Aligned with government objectives to ensure that each child has computing access, lightapp Unlimited’s first project will be working with education institutions in deprived areas, enabling them to obtain a much higher workstation to student ratio. In addition to helping schools to acquire the necessary ICT grants, lightapp Unlimited will also be reinvesting 5% of its profits into social enterprise initiatives.

lightapp’s Solution – A Unique New Concept

With lightapp’s hosted computing solution, there’s no need for expensive PCs. The computer processing and software are hosted and managed remotely, with users accessing their personalised workspaces from any broadband connected screen. Cost savings come from dramatic reductions in hardware costs, immense electricity savings, and virtually eliminating ICT maintenance. Specifically designed for ease of administration, all software upgrades, security, backup and storage are managed at lightapp’s state-of-the-art data centres.

Reduced Costs, Improved Results, While Also Being Environmentally Friendly

It’s not just about cheaper and easier computing, but also better computing. With lightapp’s ‘anytime, anywhere’ solution, workspaces can be accessed from any broadband connection - in and out of school. Computing speeds and reliability are also improved, while offering an environmentally friendly solution that reduces waste from hardware production, operation and disposal, resulting in overall energy savings of 96%.

Micheal Pyner, CEO of The Shoreditch Trust, an award winning charitable regeneration agency managing projects that address the Government's key neighbourhood renewal themes, said, “lightapp will play a critical roll in helping us extend computing access to small and medium sized businesses throughout our community, resulting in significant efficiency improvements. The benefits of increased workstation access in schools is clear, so we’re delighted by the prospect of working with lightapp Unlimited to reach schools in a disadvantaged area such as Shoreditch.”

Joshua Cooper, CEO of lightapp said; “With digital inclusion and reduced carbon emissions being prioritised by local authorities, there are significant grants available to support schools implementing green computing solutions. lightapp’s hosted computing solution is both green and affordable, enabling more workstation to be implemented at much lower cost. With lightapp Unlimited, even schools in deprived areas will be able to reap the benefits of increased workstation access.’
