Getting Started
All you need is a lightapp account, and a broadband connected screen and keyboard. Please visit our
What do I Need page for details.

lightapp requires a broadband connection of at least 512k. Lower bandwidth may cause slow response times or for strange things to appear on screen as we refresh the screen to backup your files.

Please visit our
What’s Included page for an up-to-date list of all software included in lightapp.

The lightapp device (called a ‘thin client’) is a low functionality, inexpensive box that connects your screen and keyboard to broadband, so you can use lightapp without even having a PC! As it’s low functionality it hardly consumes any energy, and can cut your electricity consumption by 85%, compared with a PC.

As lightapp controls the software on your workspace, it couldn’t be more secure. We protect your workspace from viruses and spam, while offering a range of ‘child friendly’ security settings. Your workspace is also backed up four times, in two separate locations so there’s no risk of losing data due to theft, viruses or even fire.

lightapp takes a number of steps to fully protect your privacy. Each account is password protected and stored in our highly secure data centres. We fully comply with the Data Protection Act of 1998 and have a comprehensive
Privacy Policy.

Using Lightapp
All you need is a browser and broadband connection to access lightapp anytime, anywhere - at home, the office, a library, or at a friend. Your workspace is saved exactly as you left it, regardless of where you login. You may however need a lightapp CD to access multimedia and VoIP functions if you’re not accessing lightapp via our connecting device.

lightapp comes complete with Open Office software, which is compatible with Microsoft Office, so all Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files can be opened and edited on lightapp. To save them in Microsoft file format simply use the ‘save as’ option and select the Microsoft format. By default they will be saved in Open Office format.

Currently you can’t as we maintain our high levels of security by blocking all individual downloads and software installations. If there is a specific piece of software that you would like us to offer, let us know via our
online enquiry form. Please note that schools have customised versions of lightapp that can include a wide range of additional software.

Simply email the files, as attachments, to your lightapp email account (yourusername@lightapp.com). If you’re using a lightapp device to connect your screen to broadband you can also transfer files by entering a USB stick into the device, and then locating your files in ‘My Documents’ > ‘My Shares’.

The first time that you use most software applications you are asked to register, whether this is in lightapp, or on a PC. By registering you can set up preferences, and these preferences are not sent to Open Office.

No, lightapp won’t work properly if you do this, as your workspace is saved exactly as you left it, and this would cause synchronisation problems.

It’s advisable to logout to ensure that no-one else can access your account, although lightapp will automatically log you out if you haven’t done anything for 30 minutes. To logout simply click on the ‘go’ button, in the bottom left corner of the screen, and then select ‘logout’.

At the moment you can't print from the home version of lightapp, as your secure workspace is not connected to your printer. We’re working on solving this, but in the meantime simply email your documents to an alternative email address that you can access from a computer that is connected to a printer.

Absolutely! You can automatically save all of your work in pdf (Adobe) format from all Open Office applications. There is an icon on the toolbar with the Adobe symbol on it. Alternatively, click on ‘File’ and then select ‘Export to pdf’.

There is no media player on your lightapp workspace, but if you’re using a lightapp device to connect your screen to broadband you will be able to watch videos and listen to music in most file formats – whether on the internet or on a USB stick plugged into the lightapp device. If you’re connected to lightapp with a PC, simply insert a lightapp CD to get the same functionality, without needing to install a thing!

Yes! If you’re using a lightapp device to connect your screen to broadband, simply plug your headset into the device, and click on the telephone icon on your workspace.
